Rear extension to a double fronted Victorian Terrace
Dinah and Nigel were looking for characterful kitchen/dining/sewing room extension to enhance their already quirky Victorian terrace.
The proposal infilled an existing rear courtyard and replaced a tiny oblong kitchen. More generous natural light was brought to the site by lowering the south facing boundary and demolishing tired rear outbuildings.
The new two storey area of extension draws on the scale and form of the previously demolished mono-pitched extension that was on the site. It is linked to the existing duo-pitch outbuilding by a glazed single storey link with balcony overlooking the garden. A large roof light drops light down into the extension and enhances bored light to the internalised utility room. Water tanks in the roof were removed in the outbuilding, which was renovated (retaining the rhythm of the neighbouring properties loft spaces) and houses the double height kitchen space.
