Deep refurbishment to a mid century house overlooking Bridgnorth

Jonathan and Berni asked us to upgrade a well proportioned but outdated 1970’s brick hillside house into a contemporary home that utilised its fantastic views towards historic Bridgnorth. The redesign of the house examined spacial arrangement, aesthetics and energy efficiency as a whole, in order to create a house that meets the demands of 21st-century living.
The house was opened up to create a double-height atrium which links a new first-floor mezzanine, kitchen/dining and exterior terrace into one stunning entertaining space which enjoys views of the town across the Severn Valley. Glass balustrades ensure uninterrupted views on entering the building, whilst a new zinc clad dormer above provides natural cross-ventilation to the living space. Full height kitchen units, a hidden door to the utility room and raised island bar help maintain the minimalist feel, even when the kitchen is is use.

External wall insulation (EWI), loft insulation, heavily insulated solid ground floors with integrated underfloor heating, whole-house mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system (MVHR), careful detailing and airtightness measures create a comfortable, healthy environment as well as significantly reducing energy bills.

The rather dowdy existing brick skin was wrapped in 250mm insulated render with contrasting anthracite aluminium triple glazed Internorm windows and Raico curtain wall to give the house a striking new look.
