Slate extension, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Characterful single storey extension

This single-storey rear extension creates a new open-plan kitchen and dining space. A utility room, previously housed in an outhouse, has been tucked into the original house, allowing the main living spaces to enjoy improved views and a stronger connection to the garden. Reeded-glass joinery screens and doors separate the utility room from the hall, hiding everyday clutter while still allowing generous natural light to flow into the hall.
Inside, oak kitchen joinery, a built-in bench seat, and simple wall panelling establish a warm, characterful space. Externally, reclaimed slate cladding, natural zinc reveals, and oak elements bring texture and life to the façade, helping the extension settle comfortably into the client’s beautiful natural garden and the Edwardian terrace. Relics of the former outhouse have been retained to form a bench seat and outdoor fireplace. A green roof enhances biodiversity and provides a soft outlook from the upper-level windows.
