Park Avenue, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Deep refurbishment and extension of an Edwardian, semi-detached house with views over the skyline of Shrewsbury.
The concept was to both restore and enhance features of the Arts and Crafts house whilst carrying out a deep, low energy, breathable retrofit to secure the buildings longevity as well as significantly improve thermal comfort. New windows and doors, underfloor heating, internal insulation, airtightness measures and whole house MVHR make for a property that is extremely easy to keep at a comfortable 20 degrees all year round.
Structural openings to the new extensions were modest in size in order to retain the integrity of the historic sections of the house. The new extensions are completely contrasting spaces to the original house; each full of direct sunlight for solar gain at strategic times of the day. The south east facing studio to the rear of the property with exposed Kerto rafters and large ash ply cupboards, opens up to a fully enclosed, landscaped courtyard. The largely glazed south facing kitchen extension enjoys views over Shrewsbury whilst providing a warm inside/outside space all year around.
